RIFE at JavaPolis 2005

Only two more weeks until the JavaPolis conference starts.

RIFE will be present in two sessions on the first day of the University (Monday, December 12th).

The first one is a Quickie from 13:40 until 13:55 where I will briefly touch the topic of web continuations and how RIFE makes them possible in pure Java. There isn't much that I can tell in 15 minutes, however, if you are wondering about what the benefits of continuations are, you'll get a nice summary. Of course, I'll be there afterwards to engage into further talks about the subject.

The second one is a BOF from 19:30 until 20:30 where I will introduce RIFE/Crud with a full-blown sample application. I only get one hour and the pace will be quick to cover everything. I already presented this material at EuroOSCON 2005, and people found it to be very interesting and had no trouble keeping up with the tempo.

See you at JavaPolis!

OpenLaszlo 3.1 released, it's AJAX now!

Last week, OpenLaszlo 3.1 has been released without much noise.

Ajax-flavoured

I'll talk more about the new features below, but one stands out in particular: they added a XMLHttpRequest class.

This is interesting, since it blurs the line between Ajax applications even more. Considering that the recently released ZK framework is called an Ajax/Xul framework, I'd say that with the introduction of this class, OpenLaszlo is now 'worthy' of the Ajax label too.

The funny part is that this new XMLHttpRequest really is more of a publicity stunt than anything else. It is less powerful than Laszlo's standard asynchronous datasets approach, as is gently suggested in the release notes:

For AJAX style applications, there now is an XMLHttpRequest class. This class implements XMLHttpRequest as specified by the WHATWG consortium.

XMLHttpRequest() implements the functionality of the <dataset> tag in a syntax that is more familiar to people with AJAX programming experience. If you are comfortable using datasets there is no reason to use this class.

Introducing RIFE LiveGuide

RIFE's User's Guide needs a complete overhaul since it has been written more than two years ago.

In the meantime, all new features have been documented in our wiki's cookbook. This is however merely a collection of information without a global context or direction that guides the reader.

Emmanuel took the great initiative of writing a conversion script to create a wikified version of the old user's guide. He has added it to the wiki and I spent a few hours cleaning things up and splitting it into separate chapters.

So, if you're feeling like helping us out with RIFE's documentation:
contribute to the LiveGuide

If you're a bit shy about modifying the text itself, you can add comments and someone else will pick them up and make the changes.

Let's bring RIFE's docs up-to-date!

Bla-bla List updates featuring in-place editing

Bla-Bla List has been a huge success: almost 4000 users, more than 5000 lists with 25000 entries. Being featured as New York Magazine's Best Daily Bet did the service a lot of good and since then there are constantly new registrations.

I thus decided to iron out the last small issues I found and add a few nice features. The official and packaged 1.0 release is very close now.

This is the overview of what's new:

  • in-place editing of list name, description and entries (click, edit, confirm)
  • totally rewritten drag & drop for a smoother experience and more a intuitive feel
  • fixed some discrepancies in the server-side implementation according to the published REST API
  • mouse-wheel support on Windows and Linux (Flash doesn't support this on MacOSX yet)
  • minor interface and text changes according to user suggestions
  • upgraded to latest OpenLaszlo version

Have fun with Bla-Bla List! If you haven't yet, try it out, it only takes a few seconds to get started.
